Zen Art offers an antidote to daily stress in its emphasis on simplicity, purity and naturalness. The creativity and the fresh interpretation of this minimalist art is introduced to us by Alicia Falcone, an artist who presents a blend of expertise in modern interior design with the principles of Feng Shui while adding the beauty of Chinese calligraphy throughout her canvas.
Classic Asian style gets a modern makeover. Part Zen and part mod, the paintings uphold the rich traditions of the Far East while resonating with a contemporary audience.
Prominent Chinese characters ground the paintings in the works of the East. They simultaneously are themselves a work of art contained within the context of a larger painting. Falcone personalizes these character renderings through playful brushstrokes. More figurative imagery, such as someone meditating, continues the Chinese theme. Red paint, emphatically used in much of Falcone’s work, harkens back to the symbolic colors found in China.
What distinguishes Falcone’s paintings from more classic oriental works is her modern approach. She evokes the minimalism of the 1950s and ‘60s by painting grids and circles. Her bold shapes and stark contrasts in color position the paintings in a contemporary sphere, regardless of their subject matter.
The artist tells us that living and traveling through Asia opened up her mind and allowed her to understand a new way of life, where art and tradition combine to create beauty and harmony. Alicia Falcone, born in Argentina, was a practicing attorney before relocating in 1993 to Singapore and changing her profession to that of artist and Oriental Interior Decorator. Now, she lives and exhibits her Zen art interpretation in Weston, Florida, USA.
